Punching up your workout routine can be a challenge, particularly if you’re glued to a desk for 40+ hours a week.
With only so much time, money and energy to split between home, work and the gym, how can a man take his appearance to the next level?
One word: DIET
You may not be able to devote 20 hours to the gym every week in a quest for that summer six-pack, but you can increase the impact of your time in the gym by improving your diet.
As scary as it sounds, eating your way to better health is easier than it sounds, particularly for the average carnivorous male thanks to the Paleo Diet.
Never heard of it? You should have. The Paleo Diet is one of the most popular diets out there for guys trying to convert flab into fab. It stresses the ingestion of meats, fruits, vegetables and high-fibre snacks while forbidding the consumption of grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar and alcohol.
Sound intriguing?—We thought you might like it. If you’re willing to give it a try, here are 3 Ways to Perfect the Paleo Diet…
Commit to Cutting Booze
Easily the least enjoyable aspect of the Paleo Diet is it’s prohibition of libations.
No beer. No wine. No spirits. No fun, right?
Not at all, but it will be hard at the start. Watching your friend slug pint after pint at the pub on Friday night while you sit idly by drinking ice water will – admittedly – take some getting used to.
Having said that, you are going to be blown away by how quickly your body responds to a lack of booze. Even if you weren’t doing Paleo, you’d notice your waistline will tightening up in as little as two weeks, but with Paleo you’re simply SUPER-CHARGING the positive impact this diet is going to have.
We can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard someone say “they’re doing Paleo” only to see them slamming martinis on the weekend…don’t be that guy.
Don’t Ditch Fat
Contrary to everything you heard in school growing up, science is now showing us that animal fat is far healthier than we previously thought.
Some of the worst fats for the body are those we create when we gorge on carbohydrates. If you’re doing Paleo, those fats are already going to go bye-bye.
But what about the fats we need for healthy skin, hair, organ function, muscle growth and testosterone levels?—Turns out, most if not all of those fats are located in the fats of fish, beef, lamb, chicken and pork.
Sound too good to be true?—It’s not. But do try and eat only grass-fed or free-range products as they tend to be free of potentially harmful antibiotics and growth hormones.
Go Nuts for Nuts
Walnuts, almonds, pistachios…go crazy at the supermarket!
Consider giving almond butter and almond milk a try in place of regular butter on your toast or dairy milk in your cereal.
But buyer be-warned:
This is not the perfect excuse to eat peanut butter by the spoonful
As fate would have it, peanuts are actually legumes, NOT nuts as their name suggests.
That means, just like beans, peanuts and peanut based products are on the list of dietary no-no’s.
