5 Swedish Brands Worth A Look

Charlotte Bound

Despite being a hub of creativity, style and general aesthetic excellence, until recently the most famous brand names to come out of Sweden were the rather pedestrian H&M and IKEA.

However, a new breed of brands hailing from the home of hot blondes and herrings are putting Sweden firmly on the fashion map. Our pick are an eclectic bunch from mainstream casual to high fashion.

At the premium end of the market sit Acne studios. It has nothing whatsoever to do with skin care for adolescents but is an acronym for ‘ambition to create novel expression.’ Do they succeed? Well, yes they do. The fashionistas’ favourite have diversified from their highly desirable jean-focused collections to offer clothing that is less minimal than you might expect. Their SS14 collection is a mash up of glam rock and grunge, which features exaggerated silhouettes such as cropped pants and super wide leg trousers. Unlike some Scandi brands, Acne aren’t afraid of colour, either. Inspired by the 20th century abstract artist Hilmaf Klint, purple, gold and multi colour graphic prints compete for attention.

A daring and eclectic collection for those intent on making a bold statement.

Nudie have a very simple brand statement. They ‘stay true to jeans’, ignoring fast fashion fads and continuing an enduring love for denim. Unsurprisingly, their SS14 collection is grounded in denim of all shapes and washes with quality and craftsmanship as standard. But it’s the selvage denim where this collection shines. Coats and jackets are tailored traditionally giving a sartorial sharpness to the streetwear staple. This clever adaptation of the current obsession with dandyism hits just the right note.

Well cut desirable denim with a social conscience you’ll want to wear for years.

Cheap Monday

Cheap Monday is one of the more mainstream Swedish fashion success stories. Established in 2000, their retro rock-inspired collections have a strong global reach, with fans from Asia to Oz. Most renowned for their skinny fit jeans, the SS14 collection features a heavy 90s influenced assortment of large logo tees and street inspired denim in a core palette of black white and grey. Exaggerated silhouettes and oversized graphics ensure this is more statement that subtle.

In A Nutshell

Youthful statement streetwear with overt early 90’s references.
